AI is a New Gatekeeper to B2B Consideration: Why B2B Brands Need an AEO/GEO Strategy

Budget season is here. And somewhere in every marketer's 2027 planning deck, there is a slide about SEO. But if there isn't one about AEO and GEO, that's a problem.

B2B buyers base their decisions on research and trust. That process used to start with a Google search. Now it starts with an AI query where a model performs a series of analyses that very few humans actually understand and crafts a shortlist of options and a series of recommended considerations. Today, 81% of industrial buyers already have a vendor shortlist before even speaking with any suppliers, while 48% use AI for that research, including to identify top suppliers, compare vendors, and assess technical fit. The picture is similar in healthcare, where across B2B software buyers, 69% report choosing a different vendor than originally planned based on guidance from an AI chatbot.

For B2B buyers, these tools offer a new method for more deeply understanding their options and potential partners. For brands, they are shifting the gravitational center of digital marketing altogether. Whether that shift is good or bad for business depends entirely on how those brands leverage visibility strategies to meet the moment.

Immersion Doesn’t End With Onboarding

“But doesn’t everyone do that?” you might be thinking. In a perfect world, sure.

But too often, the folks tasked with marketing a business or communicating with external stakeholders learn just enough to begin the assignment. They’re reading the website, paging through brand guides, interviewing a few internal experts, learning approved terminology. And then the work starts.

But that’s not building true understanding.

Establishing deep knowledge is a continuous process that fuels the thought leadership engine long after kickoff meetings and half-hour touch bases end. It requires agency partners to follow the conversations shaping your market, understand the pressures customers face, and distinguish passing trends from meaningful shifts.

In healthcare and manufacturing, two highly technical and complex industries, the most meaningful nuances can’t be absorbed through a briefing document alone. Learning must continue even when there isn’t an immediate deliverable attached.

What is AEO and GEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the process of structuring content so AI tools like chatbots, voice assistants, and AI-powered search can recognize it and serve it to users as a direct, citable answer to a query.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the process of shaping your brand's presence so generative AI models surface, cite, and represent you accurately everywhere they generate a response.

Both AI answer engines and generative AI platforms are the new starting point for more and more buyers. And unlike SEO, there is no data portal or easily accessible platform for brands to access data on queries and user activity. This reality is forcing marketing teams to rethink how to be represented in an AI-driven marketplace where broad visibility on nuanced topics matters more than chasing specific keywords.

Where SEO Still Matters and Where it Falls Short

The good news is that the brands with strong SEO foundations are starting ahead. The same architecture, crawlability, and backlink rules that work for SEO are also helpful for telling AI systems what to trust.

But while the goal of SEO was to drive users to your website, AI tools reverse the content delivery mechanism. They take the most citable content from the most trustworthy sources and deliver it on their platform. Only when users have considered the response and evaluated it for their purposes does a visit to the brand's website happen. By then, the user is already invested with an established set of beliefs about the brand.

The wide net that SEO cast was great for clicks and top-of-funnel lead capture. But AEO and GEO change what brands are optimizing for. It’s no longer enough for your website to say the right things about your company. AI systems draw from a much broader ecosystem of information, like owned content, earned media coverage, third-party websites, industry publications, and other sources they deem credible, to determine what your company is known for and whether it belongs in an answer.

This means authority must extend beyond your own website. The strongest brands will create a consistent trail of credible evidence across the market that reinforces who they are, what they know, and where they deserve to lead.

Treat AEO and GEO as Investments in Market Trust

B2B buying cycles are long, crowded with stakeholders, and built on trust and information. AI is taking on a growing share of the first round of research and filtering, giving prospects a more informed view of your company before your rep is even in the room. This means AEO and GEO are not just about visibility, but also about market trust. It determines whether enough credible evidence exists across the places that AI looks to understand your brand, include it in the right conversations, and represent it accurately when buyers ask for guidance.

If AI doesn’t find you, you may never make the consideration set. If it finds conflicting, outdated, or misleading information, the consequences can be just as significant. Brands evolve, service lines come and go, and messaging changes, but AI users don’t necessarily know which sources shaped an answer, or whether the information is current. They simply see the answer and use it to inform what they believe about your brand.

A dedicated AEO and GEO strategy helps close the gap by strengthening the signals that tell AI systems who you are, what you are credible to speak about and why you belong in the consideration set. That’s why ensuring your brand is represented accurately and visibly within AI search is now a foundational marketing priority. It isn’t another tactic competing for budget. It’s an essential investment in whether the market finds, understands, and trusts your brand the way you intend.
